SOAP

SOAP (Save Our Aged People) based in Harare and Bulawayo is a network of local volunteers who distribute food packs to elderly people struggling to survive in their own homes. They provide a ‘meals on wheels’ service to nearly 650 individuals like Clare and Mary.

Homes In Zimbabwe is a major source of their funding.

Table RightTable LeftClare is 97 years young!

Bright as a button and physically fit, “I’m not bad for 79 backwards!” she greeted us.

During WWII she was an RAF nurse in Zimbabwe and returned in 1948 with her husband to farm tobacco.

Now her savings are worthless. She survives in her own house where she has been burgled many times.

Table LeftTable RightMary is 80 years old.

She taught art to children and never married.

More recently she ran a school of weaving and tried to sell her work at craft fairs. Hyper-inflation has wiped out her savings.

She adopted her houseboy and his 3 daughters and they have lived with her for over 30 years. When she dies they will inherit the house.

Mary’s small pension is worthless and she is now very frail. She says the food parcels funded by Homes In Zimbawe are a life-saver. Table Bottom
